Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Other forms of search engine marketing (SEM) target paid listings. In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a website web presence.
As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.
The acronym “SEO” can refer to “search engine optimizers,” a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site and site content, SEO tactics may be incorporated into website development and design. The term “search engine friendly” may be used to describe website designs, menus, content management systems, images, videos, shopping carts, and other elements that have been optimized for the purpose of search engine exposure.
Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO or spamdexing, uses methods such as link farms, keyword stuffing and article spinning that degrade both the relevance of search results and the user-experience of search engines. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques in order to remove them from their indices.

In recent years, the terms white hat and black hat have been applied to the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) industry. Black hat SEO tactics such as spamdexing, attempt to redirect search results to particular target pages in a fashion that is against the search engines’ terms of service, whereas white hat methods are generally approved by the search engines.
White hats tend to produce results that last a long time, whereas black hats anticipate that their sites may eventually be banned either temporarily or permanently once the search engines discover what they are doing.
Some of the blackhat SEO tactics include: keyword stuffing, hidden text and links, doorway and cloaked pages, link farming and blog comment spam.
Reletad Black Hat Terms:
- Cookie stuffing
- Doorway page
- Google bomb
- Keyword stuffing
- Link farm
- Link flooding
- Page hijacking
- Parasite hosting
- Referrer spam
- Scraper site
- Spam blog
- Spam in blog
- Spam mass
- Traffic Power
- URL redirection
- White or black hat

Let’s face it: SEO is complicated. It involves hundreds of variables and is a continual process of adjustments and building authority over time. It requires experience, deliberate decision-making and a fine mixture of art, science, and research. In addition, proper SEO is not cheap and, perhaps the worse part, it’s hard to know if an SEO provider is actually doing their job.
The good news is with the right provider, SEO can be possibly the most powerful marketing venue for your business. It can drive viable customers and gain online exposure that can’t be attained through any other marketing outlet.
The bad news is if you choose the wrong SEO provider, it can be an exercise in futility; costing your company wasted time, effort, and
marketing dollars. Your company can be misled for years while your competitors are incorporating an effective plan and converting
customers you could have captured.
For the SEO professional, it is pretty easy to spot the vendors of a counterfeit service, but through the eyes of a typical business, all
providers are often blurred together. The result is unqualified SEO providers lose business, businesses lose customers, and the term SEO becomes a questionable service. My goal in this article is to help equip you to make the right decision for your SEO needs. The following 5 items are common tactics often used by less-than-qualified SEO
- WATCH OUT FOR GUARANTEED RANKING:
The reality is even the most seasoned SEO expert does not know what it will take to rank a website with Google, Yahoo, and Bing. The magic recipe is not public and is different with each search engine. The Only assurance worthy of consideration is one that is performance based. For example, if a company states, “if you are not top page ranked within 6 months for a viable keyword phrase, they will continue working for free until you are ranked”, it’s a promise worth merit.
- BAIT AND SWITCH:
Did you know there are several places you can be listed on the top page of Google, Yahoo and Bing? There is the maps section, Sponsored Listing section (or PPC), and then organic positioning. Organic positioning is what most businesses think of when they want an SEO service (the area that fills up most of the screen on the left of a search results page).
- THIRTY DAYS OR LESS:
This tactic plays on the customer’s desire for instant gratification. Ranking a website organically takes time. If anyone is telling you they can rank your website in 30 days or less, he should be eliminated as a viable solution. The reality is organic SEO takes months of work and adjustments.
- POOR KEYWORD SELECTIONS:
This technique is almost impossible to detect. This involves an SEO provider choosing ineffective keyword phrases that sound good, but produce little-to-no traffic. They choose ineffective keywords because they are non-competitive and easy to rank. About the only way to not fall prey to this tactic is to have multiple SEO providers perform a keyword research, then compare the data. Otherwise, you could be on the top page of Google for worthless keyword phrases. It will look good, but mean very little. I can remember talking to a subcontractor about their SEO services. My contact rattled off 10-20 keywords they were ranked for on the top page of Google. After I got off the phone, I ran a quick analysis to find the keyword phrases they gave. Each produced little-to-no traffic, were not competitive and were easy to get ranked. They were marketing themselves as an SEO provider.
- THEY KNOW MOST BUSINESSES DON’T TRACK SALES:
It is critical to track lead sources and compare with any reports given by an SEO firm. Tracking reports are easy to embellish. Of course, this is more to assure that the keywords you’ve been ranked for are effective. But investigate your SEO campaign as much as possible.
Unethical techniques by SEO providers have generated a backlash. Many claim the entire industry is “snake oil”. I can’t blame them given how frustrated I have been trying to educate others and address this issue. Unfortunately within any profession, there will be authentic professionals and less-than-qualified alternatives.
The less-than-qualified alternatives will thrive because sensationalism and over-promises sell.
The reality of Internet Marketing, although exciting, can’t compete on the surface with false promises of quick ranking, unrealistic guarantees, and cheap pricing. It is worth the time for you to make sure you have the right provider on your team.
Social Media Optimization (SMO) or Social SEO is the methodization of social media activity with the intent of attracting unique visitors to website content. SMO is one of two online methods of website optimization; the other method is search engine optimization or SEO.
There are two categories of SMO/Social SEO methods:
(a) Social media features added to the content itself, including: RSS feeds, social news and sharing buttons, user rating and polling tools, and incorporating third-party community functionalities like images and videos
(b) Promotional activities in social media aside from the content being promoted, including: blogging, commenting on other blogs, participating in discussion groups, and posting status updates on social networking profiles
Social media optimization is related to search engine marketing, but differs in several ways, primarily the focus on driving traffic from sources other than search engines, though improved search ranking is also a benefit of successful SMO.
Social media optimization is in many ways connected as a technique to viral marketing where word of mouth is created not through friends or family but through the use of networking in social bookmarking, video and photo sharing websites. In a similar way the engagement with blogs achieves the same by sharing content through the use of RSS in the blogosphere and special blog search engines.
Social Media optimization is considered an integral part of an online reputation management (ORM) or Search Engine Reputation Management (SERM) strategy for organizations or individuals who care about their online presence.
Social Media Optimisation (SMO), is not limited to marketing and brand building. Increasingly smart businesses are integrating social media participation as part of their knowledge management strategy (ie. product/service development, recruiting, employee engagement and turnover, brand building, customer satisfaction and relations, business development and more). Additionally, Social Media Optimization is oftentimes implemented to foster a community of the associated site, allowing for a healthy business to consumer relationship.
SEO Basics You Need To Know
Each online business necessities to have a site. Each site in this way needs to prioritize Search Engine Optimization. Basically, website streamlining permits your webpage to rank high in Bing’s and Google’s query items. SEO at last is an approach to expand the presence of your website in the query items directed by web clients. This inevitably prepares more activity towards your site.

Accept it or not, it needs little exertion on your part and in addition some re-tweaking on how you approach your site’s substance.
Know your remaining in internet searchers
It might be truly challenging to build your SEO exertions when you don’t screen your remaining in the web crawlers. It is essential to screen your page rank utilizing instruments, for example, the Google toolbar and Alexa. When you can, do audit your referrer log constantly so you could track where your site guests are from and in addition the pursuit terms they are utilizing to head off to your site.
Don’t disparage essential words
However much as could reasonably be expected, you have to be attentive to how you put watchwords appropriately through every part of your site, for example, on the titles, the Urls, substance and picture names. Continuously think about your catchphrases as legitimate pursuit terms. It might be ideal when you know how individuals search for data on a particular point.
Likewise, the page header and title tag are basic positions in which magic words are put. Additionally, putting a lot of catchphrases on your site is not under any condition prudent as you will be marked as an online spammer. In addition, web index insects are intended to disregard such destinations which are blameworthy of stuffing pivotal words in their substance. Continuously strategize when utilizing watchwords.
Connection once again to you
SEO essentials direct that you coordinate inside connections in your site. It is fundamentally the most simple path for you to expand movement to your distinctive pages. Likewise, it is an absolute necessity that you connection to your chronicles when processing new substance. Additionally, the stay content must be made benevolent to web crawlers. The more applicable watchwords focus to a website page, it is a considerable measure more probable for a page to show up in web search tool comes about at whatever time a client enters a question with those hunt terms. Similarly as with different sorts of SEO methodologies, it is essential for your connections to be legitimate. Don’t connect exorbitantly and unnecessarily.
Have a sitemap
A sitemap is a page which records and connections to all the principle pages on your site. This basically makes it simple for internet searcher bugs to spot your website. SEO fundamentals direct that the less clicks one necessities to have the capacity to explore through your whole site, the better.
All things considered, these SEO fundamentals will support you in making your site more approachable to web crawlers and more easy to understand to those searching for data.
Does this sound familiar? You’ve read the books, blogs like this one and attended the webinars/conferences. You get it. Online content is important. You understand we are entering a huge shift in marketing and promotion going from product pushers to trusted resources and that drive, creativity and passion count more than a big budget, especially with all the amazing tools available online.
Trusted resources like you create valuable, interesting, educational and/or entertaining content.
This might be in the form of a blog, web show, online magazine, webinar series, ebook and the list goes on.
So, you decide to hop on the content train for your business either by creating or curating the best content in your niche.
But it isn’t spreading. Nobody is commenting. Nothing is really happening. You start to get nervous. “Is this worth it?” you begin to ask yourself.
Why isn’t it spreading? Sort of like looking in the mirror and saying, “Is it me or is it you?”
Normally there isn’t just one answer and it isn’t black and white. Some things directly matter and others go a little bit deeper with more abstract, yet equally important ideas like trust and authority. But, everything adds up.
Here are a few reasons why your content is lonely and how to get back on the right track with a few hundred or thousand friends:
1. Bad Web Design
If you website looks stuck in 1997 with a construction guy digging and music playing or like a run of the mill template, there is a lack of credibility and trust. Do you share content from sites that you don’t trust?
I wish it wasn’t true, but looks matter. Think about first impressions. It is worth investing in a site that is functional and reflects your personality and brand.
2. Lacking Ease Of Sharing
The best content is like peanut butter, easily spreadable. Easily spreadable doesn’t mean that it takes a scholar to find how to share easily via social networks, email, etc.
Enabling your community, no matter how big or small to share with ease can make a huge difference.
Do you have one click sharing?
3. Product Focused Content
The best content isn’t about your product. The harsh reality is nobody cares about any of our products. People do care about interests, passions, hobbies, solving their problems, getting answer to key questions, learning etc.
For example, let’s pretend you sell dog food. A mistake is to make the content about the food. Meaning features and benefits.
The fix here is to focus on an interest or passion. People aren’t passionate about dog food. Instead, I bet there are plenty of people passionate about dogs. Training dogs, dog health, etc. A better play is for the content to focus on the bigger picture and not just the product.
4. Not-You Focused Content
Injecting personality, passion and quirks into your content? Always a good thing. Making it about you and how amazing you are. Yikes.
Make it about them, not you. It will do better. Trust me.
5. Lack Of Passion
If you aren’t passionate about your content, it will show and will hinder progress. Nobody spreads half-baked material. If you can’t get excited and pumped up about your content, how can you expect anyone else to be?
6. Unclear, Boring Or Ridiculously Long Titles
I get it. Don’t judge a book by its cover or a piece of content by its title. Fair enough. However, the reality of the matter is titles matter, a lot. They matter for search engines and humans. When you have 50 titles in front of you, which ones jump out? Why?
Spending time on titles is worth the time.
7. Oops, I Forgot My Marketing
We have all fell into this trap. You spend all the time creating the content and posting it and then no time is left topromote it. You can have the greatest content in the world, but if you don’t spend time marketing and promoting it, then it will be the loneliest, saddest, greatest most useful content in the world.
My recommendation, especially when getting rolling is to spend 80% of total “content time” marketing and promoting.
This means creating one-on-one connections on social media sites, expanding your network, digital schmoozing, perhaps hosting an event or meet up. Often the best online marketing happens offline. Content plus connections equals success. You have to give to get.
One bonus fun fact: Time. Trust, influence, authority and community isn’t built with just one post or overnight. It takes blood, sweat and tears. While the opportunity to create has been democratized, that means you have to work hard to stick out. Keep at it, experiment, refine brick by brick, click by click, over time you might be the ruler of the next content empire.
What has been your experience? What would you add to the list?
