Port St. Lucie during the 1950s was a parcel of land that was uninhabited and situated south of White City. There were a few farms and businesses, in addition to a fishing camp located near U.S. 1. In 1958, General Development Corporation bought the River Park development for $5 along with 40,000 acres located on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. The first bridge spanning over the St. Lucie River was opened in 1959 by GDC, making Port St. Lucie accessible directly by car. In 2006, CC started development on Tradition, which is its latest community development.
Where is Port St. Lucie?
The community of Port St. Lucie is situated west of the Interstate 95 intersection at Gatlin Boulevard. The area was a cattle ranch before CC started to develop it. On this site, CC developed a commercial area of around 13,000,000 square feet, in addition to space for over 18,000 residences. It is stated on the CC website that Tradition is the largest totally entitled residential development, spanning from Interstate 95 all the way north to the U.S. – Canadian border. A 1950s-era town was the model for the development of Tradition. It is also stated on the CC website that the town center of the community is called Tradition Square and hosts festivities throughout the year. It is been named as one of America’s best 100 communities and was chosen by HGV to be its site for the organization’s 2009 Green Home.
Port St. Lucie Attractions
The spring training camp for the major league baseball team the New York Mets is located in Port St. Lucie. It is also the home of the Mets rookie-level team that plays in the Gulf Coast League and the St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League. All three of the teams’ home games are played at First Data Field in Port St. Lucie. The Treasure Coast Galleons is a semi-pro soccer team that also plays in Port St. Lucie. The city is also the home of two soccer clubs, with both recreational and competitive play. The two clubs are the Make Soccer and Port Saint Lucie clubs. St. Lucie also has a golf complex called PGA Village, which includes a 54-hole golf course, along with a learning center and historical center. Port St. Lucie was the host of its very first PGA Tour Event in 2007, which was the Grim Classic, played at Tesoro.
